What is a Metal Dome?

A metal dome is a switch component used in electronic devices, usually consisting of a metal dome and conductive contacts. When pressed, the metal dome deforms and triggers the switch, completing the circuit. This design is commonly found in keyboards and control panels.

How does a metal dome work?

The working principle of a metal dome switch is relatively simple but effective. When a user presses the metal dome, the metal sheet temporarily deforms due to its elastic properties. This deformation causes the bottom of the metal dome to touch the conductive area on the circuit board, forming a current path. After releasing the switch, the metal dome returns to its original shape due to its elasticity, disconnecting the circuit and completing a switch operation.

When not pressed, the metal dome maintains its original curved shape, with a certain gap between the top and the bottom circuit board. At this time, the contacts on the circuit board are disconnected and current cannot flow. When a user presses the metal dome, the external pressure causes the metal dome to deform. The bending of the metal dome causes its bottom to touch the conductive contacts on the circuit board, closing the circuit. At this time, current can flow through the contacts, completing the circuit closure. The elasticity and design of the metal dome result in a noticeable tactile feedback, i.e. a click, when pressed. This feedback lets the user know that the switch has been pressed. When the pressing force is released, the metal dome quickly returns to its original curved shape due to its elasticity. At this point, the bottom of the metal dome will leave the contacts on the circuit board, the circuit will be broken again, and the current will stop flowing.

Types of Metal Dome Arrays

Many different shapes and actuation forces of metal domes can be ordered according to your specific application. They can be used for contact or tactile elements only. The product range is comprehensive with shapes ranging from round, cross, triangle to rectangular, diameters from 3 mm to 20 mm, and tripping forces ranging from 100g to 6000g. We are also able to design to meet the ever-changing market demands.

How to design a metal dome?

Material selection: Metal domes are generally made of stainless steel or other resilient metal materials that can maintain their elasticity and shape during repeated use.

Thickness and shape: The thickness and shape of the metal dome affect its tactile feedback. Thicker metal domes may provide a more obvious click feeling, while thinner designs may be more gentle.

Surface treatment: In order to enhance durability and improve touch, the surface of the metal dome is usually specially treated, such as plating or polishing.

Advantages of Dome Arrays

Tactile feedback: Metal dome switches usually provide clear tactile feedback, which improves the accuracy and comfort of user operation.

Durability: Metal materials have good wear resistance and can withstand a large number of press operations.

Cost-effectiveness: Compared with some high-end switches, metal dome switches have a lower production cost.

Disadvantages of Metal Domes

Noise: Metal dome switches may make a noticeable clicking sound when operated, which may not be suitable for some occasions where a quiet environment is required.

Tactile consistency: Due to manufacturing tolerances and material differences, the tactile feel of metal dome switches may be slightly inconsistent.

Metal Dome Applications

Computer keyboards: In many computer keyboards, especially laptops and external keyboards, metal dome switches are widely used because of their lightness and durability. The buttons in some computer mice also use metal dome switches to ensure the accuracy and durability of clicks.

Remote controls: Many remote control buttons also use metal dome switches to provide reliable key feedback.

Consumer electronics: Such as mobile phones, home appliances, etc., metal dome switches are used as various operation buttons and control panels.

Medical equipment: In some medical equipment, metal dome switches are used for operation control because of their precise tactile feedback and durability.

Industrial control: In industrial control systems, metal dome switches are used as buttons on machine control panels because they can withstand harsh environmental conditions and frequent use. The operation interface in many test and measurement equipment also uses metal dome switches to ensure the stability and accuracy of equipment operation.

Gaming equipment: Some game controllers use metal dome switches to provide precise key feedback and enhance the gaming experience. Metal dome switches are also integrated into the operation panels or control buttons of some game consoles to increase the reliability and durability of operation.

Automotive: In the control panel of the car, metal dome switches are used for various function buttons, such as air conditioning control, audio system and navigation control. Its durability and tactile feedback are particularly important in the automotive environment. Some high-end car models are equipped with metal dome switches on the steering wheel to control functions such as volume and phone answering.

Maintenance and care

Avoid liquid contact: Try to avoid liquid entering the switch to prevent corrosion or affect the performance of the switch.

Cleaning: Clean the switch surface regularly to prevent dust or dirt from accumulating and affecting the operating feel.

Check for wear: Check the switch regularly for wear or damage and replace it if necessary to ensure the normal operation of the device.

Avoid excessive pressure: Avoid applying excessive pressure or frequent operation on the switch to reduce physical damage and wear to the metal dome.
